Since as far back as we can remember, our relationship with technology has always been a patchy one, especially when it comes to water. Let’s not beat around the bush here, the Earth is predominantly made up of water, so at some point or another, our technology will come into contact with water and as we all know well, because this is primary school knowledge here, water and electricity are best friends, which makes water and technology worst enemies. Why do you think brands spend such a great deal of money on R&D into water resistant innovations, simple, it’s big business, we as consumers buy our products with at least these two conscious decision making factors in mind, whether or not we’ll be electrocuted if water gets to it, or whether or not it’ll stop working if water gets to it, especially if said product is supposed to be “portable”. Well, at least we have one less fret when it comes to our music and Cannonball Audio is responsible for making that happen.

The Cannonball Audio is a revolutionary little device that takes an existing problem and flips it entirely on its head. No more worrying about getting your speakers wet by bringing it too close to the pool, no more worrying about having to dry your hands whilst in the shower to skip that song you aren’t so keen on hearing, no more worrying about whether your phone is ‘water resistant’ enough to be able to tolerate a few drips, all your problems are solved with a speaker that does it all.
Portable speakers are certainly not in short supply, you only need to type “portable speaker” into Google to be bombarded with a variety you can buy all with different boasted specifications. This one can connect to all devices, that one has better sound quality, but how many can boast to be waterproof? The Cannonball Audio 360° IPX-7 Floating Speaker is not only designed to withstand water, but also float upright on top of it, so that you can leave it to bob on the water and change the song playing (or pause) whenever you so feel like it, now isn’t that handy!
Don’t be fooled though, just because IPX-7 is all about waterproofing, doesn’t mean that its other features have taken a hit, on the contrary, the aim is still about delivering clear and crisp sound quality, so it is capable of producing 360° of pristine sound and the counterbalance keeps the water from drowning out your music (pun intended). Speaking of drowning, IPX-7 may be water resistant, but it’s also pretty water resilient too, capable of being ‘fully submergible up to 1 meter for 30 minutes’.
The project is currently in funding process and you can do your part to make its arrival to grubby little fingers (and of course into water) everywhere a reality over at the kickstarter page and while you are at it, be sure to check out the website.
